How to Install Your New Countertops

Design and Cut Your New Countertop Template

If you’re taking on the do-it-yourself project of installing new countertops, be sure to exercise caution and precision. The first step is always the most crucial – take accurate measurements, mark your materials accordingly, slash according to dimensions for laminate counters, and decide where appliances will ultimately fit. Remember that a counter overhang should extend between three-fourths and one inch! Measure twice…cut once!

After determining your cut lines with a pencil or masking tape, use clamps to firmly attach the laminate countertop slab onto a secure surface. Next, utilize your saw to execute precise cuts and finish off by sanding the area down with either fine-grit sandpaper or a file for an even smoother result.

Prepare the Countertop Area

Before you can reap the beauty of your new countertops, some preliminary work must be done – including possibly removing any existing ones.

You’ll need to:

  • Disconnect your water source to the kitchen or bathroom where you’re working
  • Remove appliances, such as the sink, range, and drain trap
  • Scrape away the caulking that holds your backsplash in place
  • Remove the old backsplash and any extra tiles

Remove the Old Countertop

  1. To remove the corner bolts and screws that connect your old countertop to the wall, start by scraping away any caulking along the wall. The old counters should then slide off in one piece, however, if silicone was used there may be a bit of extra effort required – run a warm cloth over it first to loosen up what’s left before using an abrasive scrubbing pad for complete removal.
  2. Enlist the help of a friend or family member to lift your old counter and move it somewhere out of the way.

Secure Your New Countertop to the Cabinets

After you’ve got your ideal fit, it’s time to get those new countertops in place. Each producer will reveal the most suitable method for installing its products. When we’re talking about laminate countertops, there are basically two choices:

  1. To ensure that your new countertops stay firmly in place, apply caulk or adhesive across the top edges of your cabinets. To guarantee proper alignment during the drying process, you must utilize shims every 12 to 18 inches along the way.
  2. Your laminate countertops peel-and-stick, and you only need to remove the barrier when installation time comes.

Installing a new countertop is no small feat, and requires careful planning and precision. However, with the right tools and tips in hand, you’ll be able to complete this project like an expert!

From measuring twice before cutting once to ensuring proper alignment during installation for your laminate countertops, following these steps will set you up for success. And don’t forget – enlisting help from family or friends can make all the difference when it comes to achieving the perfect fit.

With patience and care throughout each step of this process, your newly installed countertop should last you years into the future!
